Did I say the other day that there were big things happening at Wallaby Ridge? Well now there are HUGE things happening at Wallaby Ridge.

Most notably the driveway is now more like a super highway, but also a friend is moving here to set up a house and co-habit on the land with Geri and me, so we now have a pad for a second house that will be arriving soon.

The driveway work costs a fortune and one could argue that it would have been cheaper to buy two 4x4 vehicles for Geri and our friend.

Finally the chronicles break into 2024, I'm catching up, only 10 months to go.

Till next time then, and remember,

Don't Dream it, Be it!

Tue 02 Jan 2024

The cage around the Zen garden is finished. I don't know why there are no photos of the construction but here are a couple that show the end result.

So now the humans live in a cage and the animals roam free.

I don't know what I'm going to do with these wheels but I couldn't resist buying them.

I'll integrate them into a gate or a fence one day.

Today I'll slice up and stack one of the trees Dave pushed over the other day with the digger.

This is the area where the new house will be placed and we're trying to make it safer by removing some of the larger trees that will be too close to the house.

Then I drop another big iron bark that could be a problem as it overhangs the location of the new water tanks.

That didn't take long to write but it was a long job to do, mostly the clearing and stacking of the first tree, so the clearing of that last tree can wait for another day.

Sun 07 Jan 2024

Here we are on another day. I slice up all that iron bark and stack the rounds in one pile and the trash in another.

I've been saying for some time now that I can work hard or I can work all day, but I can't work hard all day. There's a heck of a lot of fire wood in that tree and the work is a bit tough on my old back, so that will do for today.

Tue 09 Jan 2024

The driveway at Wallaby Ridge has left something to be desired for a few years now, both my vehicles are high-clearance 4x4s so I didn't care (still don't) but Geri's car is quite low as is our friend's. So the driveway is getting a makeover, starting today and we've contracted a local bloke called Josh to do the work.

He has a digger and a positrack of course but equally important is a roller/compactor, seen here.

The new "road" needs to be propery crowned and compacted and you need a roller to do that.

It also needs a lot of road base and that and road base is not cheap, well actually the material deosn't cost a huge amount, it's the transport that's a killer.

Fortunately the dirt right here on my land is suitable, so Josh starts a "borrow pit" to the side of the driveway.

This will leave a huge scar on the land but I don't really care and anyway nature will cover it in a few years.

The digger and positrack.

Wed 10 Jan 2024

It's looking good eh?

There's a low spot that gets a little boggy so Josh has had to bring a load of course gravel to beef that up a bit.

Thu 11 Jan 2024

Our friend will be setting up camp here soon, and by "camp" I mean a transportable house and a permanent garage, plus water tanks, solar system etc etc. This will need a large pad so Josh starts on that job today.

The driveway is not quite finished yet but he is alternating between jobs depending on various factors, such as the weather.

Thu 18 Jan 2024

We've been having a lot of rain lately, not heavy but constant. I don't think it's affected the earthworks that much, in fact it's been good because you need the material to be damp to compact it properly.

The house pad is pretty much done.

Meanwhile I indulge in some mushroom photography.

Sat 20 Jan 2024

The driveway is almost finished and it looks great.

So good in fact that one of my neighbours, who can now see the drive from his place, has named it the "Gin Gin bypass".

Tue 23 Jan 2024

And the housepad is pretty much finished as well.

Including an area next to that for two water tanks.

Comment  ::   Yep, it certainly is full steam ahead around here, place is unrecognizable compared to a year or so back, even a few months back really.
