Editorial

More than a year now since I wrote a blog, now that's a record even for me. There are many reasons for this, no single one was enough to cause this but when combined, well you know the result.

So let's give it a go again, I'll try to catch up, maybe by rapid firing 3-4 blogs each covering just a few months, but in doing so I think we'll just have photos with short remarks, no time for long pithy monologues for now.

So the main thing happening is of course my partner, we are very much in love and this has pretty much caused the other main thing, extending the house. This started as a simple project to house a new table...well I'll explain more below.

I thank those that are still dropping in to see what I'm up to, there aren't many of you left but as Mr Sharkey says, there is a cause-and-effect result, people like to see enthusiasm, it's contagious and if they see that then they can get enthusiastic as well, I know this myself as I often see a Youtube channel that looks promising but then look at the history of posts and see very infrequent content and none for six months so I just move on.

I do have another interest in continuing this blog, that being that it has been a valuable resource for me over the years, I often look back to find when/what/where/why I've done something over the past couple of decades

It's like a diary, but without the real personal stuff.

I think that the time of blogs has passed, what with Facebook, Instagram et al, but they are a poor substitute in my opinion because your content quickly gets lost in a sea of noise. So I reckon that a personal blog still has a place in this world, and even if it doesn't what do I care, I've always done exactly what I wanted to do, no reason to change now eh?

Till next time then, and remember,

Don't Dream it, Be it!

Tue 03 Jan 2023

For all my adult life I've eaten most meals on my lap, and for evening meals usually watching the TV. Well I no longer watch the TV at all, but Geri has always eaten at a table and the other day she commented that it would be nice to have a dining table...a two seater, maybe four in case we have visitors.

I let my fingers to the walking on Facebook market place and find just the thing.

Well sort of, it's a TEN seater but that's kinda like 4 isn't it? Well they are both multiples of 2. Anyway that's pretty much how I roll, going over the top that is.

Still I think my hermit kingdom could well become something more of a social hub in future so you never know, we might have eight visitors for dinner one day.

So where to put this massive table?

I know, I'll just extend the house a little.

At first I thought I'll just enclose the sheltered patio area, seen here on the left shading the step ladder.

But have I mentioned that I tend to over achieve in some fields? I've decided to make a new room, to be called the Great Hall of the People and in the above photo you can see a peg in the ground (bottom left), that's the proposed corner of the hall.

Wed 01 Feb 2023

I guess I won't be getting much work done today.

Thu 16 Feb 2023

Things are progressing rather well, I have set most of the posts and am now clamping various rails in place to give me a better idea of what goes where.

Thu 02 Mar 2023

I have done a lot of the floor joists and it's getting a bit difficult to walk across them, so today I went into Bundy and picked up three sheets of yellow tongue, I do plan to floor the hall with this material and I'll need a lot more than three sheets to do that, but for now I'll just place these ones where needed to make it easier to walk around and also to provide a better surface to place ladders etc.

TIP: This material is very slippery, the manufacrturer does put a glue-like substance between the sheets so they don't move during transport but when you seperate them to load onto a ute it doesn't work well any more and the sheets are very likely to slide across each other, not good when driving. So I take a few pieces of that non-slip material you get to line drawers with, and place two of them between each yellow tongue sheet. That seems to work.

Sat 11 Mar 2023

There's been quite a lot done on the framing and floor joists. Here we see the joists.

I haven't stumped the floor yet so it's a little springy, but solid enough for now.

Note that I can't finish this floor until that large door is removed, and I can't remove that until this entire area is weather proof, so for now there will be a large gap in the flooring.

Note also the awning here, that was the part I originally thought to enclose for the new table. That would have been simple and cheap to do, but the end result would not have been clever as it still wasn't really large enough an area. But more than that it would be miles away from the kitchen which is behind that wall on the extreme right of the photo. So anything prepared in said kitchen would have to be transported through my office and also the bedroom to get to the table.

That is not a very clever design.

So, as you can see the extension has taken on a life of its own. When done it will not only house the new table but also a new lounge suite and a new kitchen.

And if you think that's getting out of hand just wait to see how it's turning out, to be revealed in future editions, but let's just say the term "Bigger than Ben Hur" springs to mind.

Wed 15 Mar 2023

Not a lot has changed, just another angle to give you a better idea of what's what and a clearer view of the floor joists.

The current kitchen is behind that plank wall at the left of the photo, where the yellow tongue is leaning.

When this area is weather proof and we have the new kitchen at least functional I'll remove that wall, strip the old kitchen and probably turn it into a storage area or something.

This is now quite a large area, and to be honest it's plenty of space, but of course I can't really stop there and have more ideas.

Thu 23 Mar 2023

I mentioned above that I no longer watch TV, this is mostly because it's just a real time waster full of drivel and advertisements, but also I no longer trust anything I see on the news, so why even watch it?

I do however like to watch a movie and we plan to have regular entertainment nights, there will be at least one other person living here in the block soon and maybe even more later as I would like to form a small "tribe" here. Yes I could sign up with Netflix or something and stream videos but despite my tech background I prefer an option that doesn't depend on the Internet.

So I've started buying up DVDs.

As most people are into streaming these days this is going against the flow and you can buy DVDs for almost nothing. I think there are about 400 here and I plan to get a lot more.

Tue 28 Mar 2023

I love "my" scrub turkeys, but they can be a right PITA at times, here we see one removing the table cloth and about to break that white bowel.

This is in the Zen garden and it's a place we love to sit, but we can never relax because of the birds and also the garden cannot be developed because they just dig everything up.

We do have a solution...and no I will not harm the birds...we'll get on to that soon.

Love watching the projects. We live in suburbia that's been 'rezoned' to a new sardine standard from having 4 neighbors to 12! Stupid planning laws requiring silly unusable spaces on already minuscule houses. It's refreshing to see construction fit for purpose than fit for bureaucrats.
Keep at it Rob. Blog forth [ even if it only happens once a year ;) ]

After spending a week staying in Brisbane to house-sit & look after my daughter's dog, I couldn't live in suburbia again. Neighbours, noise, traffic...
Can't wait to back in the truck & on the road!

Looking forward to the next Blogs.

Question: you commented some years ago that you used the "Brave" internet browser, I tried it out and for all these years it has been excellent !!, however a couple of months ago mine stopped working, as it had been discontinued for Windows 7 & 8 , do you know any browsers that will stop Ads and still run on Win7??
